Happy Hump Day! Today’s Wedding Wednesday post is going to cover hair and makeup. I’ve been asked by a few engaged friends lately what I thought about paying for hair and makeup services for the wedding versus doing it yourself. So, I thought I would share my thoughts and a few reasons why I decided to pay for my bridesmaids and me to have our wedding hair and makeup done by a pro 🙂
Wedding Hair and Makeup
Let’s just cut to the chase, we all want to look beautiful on our wedding day. There’s just no if’s, and’s, or but’s about it. If you’re like me, you probably have a Pinterest board dedicated to beautiful wedding hair and makeup looks you love (mine’s here if you’re interested ;)). And honestly, I went back and forth about doing my and my bridesmaid’s hair, or having it done. What it really came down to for me when making the decision however, was #1 – budget, and #2 – how did I want to feel on my wedding day and how did I want the day to flow?
Professional Wedding Hair and Makeup
If you decided to pay for professional wedding hair and makeup, you’re almost guaranteed to look how you want. You may have a specific look in mind and don’t want to run the risk you won’t be able to recreate it yourself. If this is the case, then going with a professional is important. This was one of the main reasons why I decided to pay to having professional wedding hair and makeup. I knew exactly what I wanted to look like, and I didn’t trust myself to pull it off!
Having someone else do your wedding hair and makeup can help take some of the stress away. You will probably have a tight schedule the day of the wedding, and having the added stress of being responsible for your own hair and makeup can be a challenge. I knew I wanted to be able to relax with my bridesmaids the morning of the wedding. We were able to eat some breakfast, have a mimosa, and just spend some downtime together before the craziness started. This was probably my #1 reason for why I decided to pay for professional wedding hair and makeup.
Doing Your Own Wedding Hair and Makeup
Doing your own wedding hair and makeup versus having it done professionally can be very cost effective. If cost is something you’re worried about, I would highly recommend checking out Thumbtack. Thumbtack is a website where you can submit a request for services (i.e. wedding hair and makeup, photography, limo service, etc.) and professionals in the area will submit bids for you to choose from. You can view the persons profile and even look them up online, as well as negotiate the price right through the site. They even have a mobile app for convenience! I used it to find my wedding hair and makeup, boudoir photographer, florist, DJ, and wedding photographers! It’s super simple and really makes finding a great vendor easy breezy.
In a nutshell, I do think having your wedding hair and makeup done professionally is worth it. For me personally, I wanted to be able to relax and enjoy my day and not having to worry. However, there’s definitely nothing wrong with doing your wedding hair and makeup yourself. If it’s just not in the budget, then doing it yourself is totally fine! If you want some guidance or tips, you can always search around on Pinterest and pin some ideas you love. Also, watching YouTube videos can be helpful as well! Lastly, just remember to practice! That way aren’t trying to create a specific look for the first time the day of the wedding 🙂
I hope you guys enjoyed reading my thoughts on wedding hair and makeup! Do you have any tips of your own? Let me know in the comments and I’ll see you on Friday!

I’ve been debating about this myself, and I think that getting it professionally done definitely will allow for a lot less stress on the wedding day!

Yes, that’s the number 1 reason I wanted to do it! I just wanted to feel relaxed and pampered 🙂

I’m definitely in the “get your makeup done professionally” boat, but I’ve definitely seen friends watch YouTube videos and still look stunning on their wedding days! Your wedding photos are gorgeous btw – where is your dress from? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks babe! I bought my dress at Bridal Exclusives, they have a shop in Clackamas, Oregon as well as in Tigard, Oregon! It’s a Maggie Sottero dress 🙂

I think it is worth it as long as you find the right people. I wish I had pushed harder to get what I wanted because while my hair and makeup was ‘okay’ it definitely wasn’t what I was really wanting…but I paid a premium for it regardless!

You know, sometimes it can be reeeally hard to push for what we want! I actually wished I had done that with my hair, because I really like the wavy loose and messy curl look more than the traditional “wedding” curls. But it still looked stunning and didn’t make my day any less special. But I totally get where you’re coming from 😉

So stunning! I’m all about getting it professionally done with a run through or several, lol, before your big day!

I’m with you girl! I just did not trust myself! xoxo

Loved this! I recently got engaged and there was no question in my mind about my hair and makeup being done for the big day. I will be having a makeup artist do mine for sure. I do not want to stress out about not looking to way I want. As far as my bridesmaids go as well, I will have their hair and makeup done too.
