Pregnancy
Hey loves! Today’s post is going to be a “story time” about my labor and delivery experience. I’ve always known, since before getting pregnant, that I wanted to try and go through labor without an epidural, and I actually managed to do it!...
Being pregnant is one of those stages in life where a lot changes in a short amount of time. The way I like to think of it is pregnancy took forever to go by in the blink of an eye. Now that I’m at the end, I’ve been able to reflect on what my experience has looked like and and what my pregnancy taught me about myself.

Pregnancy Taught Me More Than I Anticipated
You don’t always get to choose the path your life takes, but you do get to choose how you deal with it. When I got pregnant, Eihab and I were not trying. In fact, I had just recently decided I was OK with waiting awhile and just enjoying each other’s company. Maybe doing a bit of traveling together. I had even started telling my friends and family when they would ask the inevitable “so when are you getting pregnant?” Then BAM. Two weeks later I found out I was pregnant LOL. Total shocker and not the way I thought things would go. It would have been really easy for me to feel bummed that maybe we weren’t going to get in all that traveling I’d hoped for, but then when I think about how amazing it will be to show our daughter the world, I’m so grateful that it happened when it did.
Your priorities shift almost immediately when you become pregnant. It’s really the strangest thing, but nothing matures you and makes you see what’s really important like bringing another human into the world. I remember before I got pregnant, I was really excited to quit my day job at Providence and work for an image consultant full time. But within weeks of becoming pregnant I realized how important it was to me to maintain a job that would give my family health insurance. The peace of mind that comes with having a 9-to-5 job outweighed any desire I had to jump head-on into a career of working for myself. Even though it’s still a goal for me, pregnancy taught me that sometimes you have to change the path you’re on to get to the same destination.
There’s a serious IDGAF mentality when you’re pregnant. I don’t know if it’s just me, but a lot of my priorities and things I was willing to put up with changed after I was pregnant for awhile. It’s a lot easier for me to say “no” to people now than ever before, and the type of relationships I value has become very clear to me. I’ve realized how important it is to me to have “low-maintenance” friends. People in your life who you don’t have to see or talk to every day, but when you do get together it’s like no time has passed…that’s what I crave more of. I also want to surround myself with just straight up good people. People who care about others and have the ability to put themselves in other’s shoes. Maybe it’s because I’m hormonal, but I think it has everything to do with the fact that the people I surround myself with are going to be the same people who are around my daughter, and I feel like I need to choose them wisely.
Pregnancy taught me some negatives as well, like I have an unhealthy relationship with my weight and body image. I’ve always known to some degree that I cared more about my weight than I should, but being pregnant really intensified this awareness. It’s been extremely difficult for me to watch the number on the scale go up every week, and it’s been challenging to embrace the changes my body is going through. Even though I’m so grateful to be pregnant and can’t wait to have my Baby Girl here, I can’t help but get down on myself sometimes. I’m really glad I’ve made this realization though, because it means I have something I can work on and area where I need to grow. I’m not 100% sure how I want to go about learning and growing through this life lesson…I’ll probably read some books to be honest LOL. Maybe some blogs as well, but I’m not in to the tough love, “stop body shaming yourself cause you’re fabulous” type of thing. I just find those types of posts or advice to come from more of a shallow place without a lot of depth to the content or understanding from the writer. So we’ll see, but I’ll keep you all posted 🙂

Ok ladies, it’s officially here. The ULTIMATE maternity style guide for your prego fashion needs. I can tell you right now, everyone has their own opinion on what you need and what you don’t during this transition period, so I’m going to break it down and share with you EVERYTHING I’ve purchased, and what items I’m still wearing from my pre-pregnancy days. Let’s get started.

Maternity Style Guide - Top 5 Most Important Tips
Before I break it down and list out everything I’ve purchased for my maternity wardrobe, I wanted to share my top 5 ride-or-die tips when it comes to dressing your bump:Comfort is key – if you wouldn’t want to wear it for 12 hours straight, don’t buy itYou’re going to be hotter than you think – temperature does a funny thing to a pregnant woman’s body…so keep that in mind when choosing fabrics and silhouettesYes, your feet really do go up a size – this doesn’t mean run out and buy all new shoes (though you may be tempted), but styles like open toe or sandals are GREATDresses and skirts get shorter as the bump gets bigger – this one makes me so sad, especially since I’m tall“Be confident in whatever you’re wearing and you’ll look good no matter what” – according to my husband LOL
Ok, now that we’ve gone over some tips, let’s get in to what you absolutely need for your maternity wardrobe!Maternity Style Must-Haves:Maternity jeans/jeggings (2) – there are options for an under-the-bump fit, but I personally hate the way this feels and would much rather have the high-waist additional belly support style!Maternity shorts (1) – again, the extra belly support is a must!Maternity slacks (3) – I work in an office so I have to dress pretty business casual. I purchased three pairs of maternity slacks in total (2 black and 1 grey), and they’re great for the office!Maternity leggings (2) – I have one pair of maternity leggings for workout/lounge, and one pair that are more work appropriate.
Nursing bra (1) – I went ahead and purchased a nursing bra early as I could tell my rib cage was getting wider. It is SO comfortable that I don’t wear any other type of bra now LOL.Maternity tops (6) – so far I’ve purchased a total of three maternity t-shirts, one maternity tank, one nursing shirt, and one office blouse. I found that I can actually get away with wearing a lot of the work blouses I had prior to getting pregnant as they are pretty loose and flowy, but t-shirts and tanks tend to get a little too short.Maternity dresses (6) – depending on the style and fit, I’ve been able to wear most of my own dresses. Long and flowy (or even tight but stretchy) has been fine for me, but I have purchased a few maternity specific dresses, especially for work.
Shoes (2) – now don’t get me wrong, I’ve purchased more than two pairs of shoes in the past 7 months, I’ve just only purchased two for the sake of my pregnancy. The first are a pair of white casual Guess sneakers, and the second are strappy sandals from Target (literally so comfortable, you absolutely have to get something like them!)What NOT to buy:Above are all the clothing items I’ve purchased throughout my pregnancy, and now I want to tell you what I think you can skip out on. Some people can get away with just buying a size or two bigger than they used to wear with things like dresses and tops, but I’ve found that maternity specific styles just fit better in general.Pregnancy underwear – I have not needed to get any of these, however I probably will get the post partum panties once I give birth.Maternity cardigans and jackets – what does that even mean??? Seriously, such a scam.Maternity swimwear – I’ve just been wearing suits I’ve always had my entire pregnancy. The types that fit best seem to be low rise bikinis.Where to shop:My #1 favorite maternity store is definitely Motherhood Maternity. They have their own boutiques, or you can shop them at most Macy’s. You can also shop them online! I’ve found that their clothes specifically fit me the best, especially the maternity jeans and slacks. The one downside I will admit is that most of their clothes are kind of basic. I did get this dress from Motherhood Maternity, but it’s about the most stylish piece they have in store. Online they seems to have some better options, especially in the jeans department, but if trend and style is what you’re looking for then I would recommend checking out ASOS. I never knew they had a maternity line, I actually just discovered it a couple weeks ago when I was shopping for a wedding guest dress.Other than Motherhood Maternity and ASOS, I’ve shopped at Ross and Target for maternity clothes. I love Target’s nursing bra (this one here is my fave) and their leggings are super comfy. I should also mention Pink Blush as I know it’s a well known online maternity boutique. They actually sent me two dresses to try out, and neither of them worked for me because I’m too tall. I ordered my regular size (small) and they were not only really tight, but just way too short for my height. Definitely NOT work appropriate lol.

You know how everyone says morning sickness is a first trimester symptom? Yeah, that’s a lie. My morning sickness carried over into the second trimester, which all in all didn’t feel that much different to the first. However, there were a whole slew of new symptoms and experiences, some of which are kiiind of hilarious, in a sad sort of way LOL.

Second Trimester - what's all the hype about?
Contrary to the photo below, the second trimester DID NOT make me want to jump off a rooftop lol. To break down my experience, I really have to break up the trimester into halves. The first half of my second trimester was much like my first, excessive sleepiness and feeling hungover were the predominant symptoms I experienced between weeks 14-20. I also started experiencing a few new things during this time as well:Weight gain – during the first trimester I only gained something like 5 lbs…during the second, I gained about 20 #HolyShitHunger – one of the reasons for me gaining 20 lbs during the second trimester was probably due to the fact I was hungry literally all. the. time.Little baby kicks – I felt my first “flutter” at about 14 weeks, and at around 16 weeks I was feeling baby girl kick daily. For any of you who’ve never been pregnant…this is probably one of the most amazing feelings in the entire world!
Between weeks 17-27, my pregnancy started to get a little easier. The nausea started to go away and the most annoying symptom was the weight gain. When I went to my first prenatal appointment, they told me I should gain between 25-30 lbs total throughout my pregnancy, so when I had already gained 20 lbs at 24 weeks, I was a liiiittle freaked lol. Turns out they were wrong on their estimates based on my BMI, and I’m actually supposed to gain between 30-40 lbs (thank God cause I’m 30 weeks now and I’ve gained 30 lbs).I also started to get a cute little bump during this part of my pregnancy (in this picture I was 20 weeks pregnant). It’s funny how each stage of my pregnancy I thought to myself “wow, I’m HUGE,” but looking back it’s like “wow…I was so small” LOL.
Second Trimester SymptomsBack pain – as the bump grows it puts strain on your back. Totally normal but not all that enjoyable! Working out more regularly really helped though.Increased energy – around the end of the second trimester I started feeling way more energized. This might also have something to do with maintaining a regular workout schedule as well, but it was definitely a welcome change!Luscious locks – I don’t know what it is about this pregnancy, but I magically only have to wash my hair 2-3 times a week now…Clear skin – the second trimester also brought the clearest skin I’ve had since the age of 13 *knocks on wood*
Overall, my second trimester was much like the first, with a few welcome improvements (the hair and skin for one). The best part of the second trimester though was definitely feeling baby girl kicking and rolling around 🙂 And getting to see her in our 20 week anatomy ultrasound was amazing as well! I also really enjoyed the fact that people started to notice I was pregnant, especially towards the end. During the first trimester and first half of the second, I would notice people looking at my bump, but they wouldn’t say anything. I imagine they weren’t sure if I was pregnant or if I’d just eaten a big meal LOL. Anywho, towards the mid-end of the second trimester, people actually started commenting, which is super fun 🙂Shop the Bump Style

Happy Friday! Today is an exciting day for me because it marks the start of a new blogging chapter. I decided to start a “pregnancy” section of my blog to share some of my experiences, and I hope to use it as a way to connect with others who have gone through or may be going through the same things. I thought it would be good to start off with a general pregnancy update just to get the ball rolling 🙂 So this first post is going to be all about my first trimester symptoms and experiences (and please feel free to leave me advice below, cause girl, I need it!).

Pregnancy Update
So I’m currently 17 weeks and 1 day pregnant according to my due date. This means I’ve been in my second trimester for almost 4 weeks (first trimester ends at roughly 13 weeks and 3 days). Learning all the pregnancy lingo and signs and symptoms were pretty easy for me, but there were a few surprises!Weird First Trimester SymptomsI had a lot of the normal first trimester symptoms, like extreme fatigue, nausea, sore boobs, etc. But a couple symptoms I experienced were a little concerning, weird, and gross LOL.
The first was cramping. I guess I just never realized that cramping throughout the first trimester was normal, and not a sign of miscarriage. We’re taught to freak out if we have period cramps or spotting during pregnancy, but really it’s just your uterus stretching to accommodate it’s new tenant.
Secondly, and this may be TMI but…the discharge! #OMG I didn’t realize my vagina would turn in to Niagara Falls, but there it was. It’s something that’s mentioned, sure. “You might experience increased discharge…” But let’s be real, the internet should actually just tell you your body is creating it’s very own slip and slide.
My First Trimester ExperienceI feel pretty lucky compared to most mom-to-be’s because my first trimester went rather smoothly. I was extremely tired, but that was probably the worst first trimester symptom. Honestly it was so bad that some days I couldn’t even get off the couch. I didn’t work out at all during the entire first trimester, which is a huge change for me. I used to workout 4-6 days a weeks for an hour to an hour and a half. So this was a drastic change for my body. Even though it was a change for me, I felt like it was needed. I tend to push myself pretty hard, so listening to my body and just allowing myself to rest was probably exactly what I needed.Ok, ok, I’m sure you’re wondering “but what about the morning sickness?!” Well, I got pretty lucky in that area. I had a lot of nausea that would start around 11:00am and last till dinner time, but I only threw up a handful of times. Trust me, I’m thanking my lucky stars on that one.The Emotional AspectAll in all, my first trimester went fairly well! The hardest part for me was internal. I know this is totally ridiculous and no one seems to understand how I feel, but the physical change in my body shape has been the toughest thing for me to deal with emotionally. I don’t want to seem vain, but I was pretty proud of my body before I got pregnant. I had worked for a year and a half to lose 40lbs, and I went from a size 14 to a size 4 during that time. So watching my abs disappear, my legs and arms swell up, and my waist start to disappear has been really hard on me emotionally. I’m trying to change my perspective as I am SO GRATEFUL for this little girl growing inside me, it’s just been a hard change. If any of you mommy’s have a perspective you’d like to share, please leave me a comment! I really would appreciate the advise 🙂
